Located at an approximate distance of 150 kilometers from the Southern part of Kolkata, Sagardweep is actually an island where the Ganges meets the sea. Every year in mid-January, Sagardweep gets crowded with thousands of devotees who gather at the Sangam (the meeting point of Ganges and the sea) for taking a holy dip to get rid of all sins. A huge mela (fair) takes place on the coast and turns into a big festival for the religious people.
However, holy dip in the Ganges is not the only reason why people visit sagardweep. Thanks to its unique geographical location, the Sagardweep offers great scenic beauty that attracts tourists, who look for places to enjoy weekends. Besides, there is a 19th century lighthouse in sagardweep, from where a panoramic view of the coastal Bengal is available.
Sagardweep is very well-connected with Kolkata both by roadway and railway but the later is preferred by more people as the journey is short. Bay taking a Diamond Harbour-bound train from Sealdah South section one can reach close to Sgardweep within two hours. After getting down from the train at Diamond Harbour, one can take cycle van or a bus to be at the island.
The standard of accommodatin facility at sagardweep is not as developed as other beach resorts in the area but still one can find hotels that offer satisfactory services. Food, especially variety of fishes is available in Sagardweep, as the economy of the area is largely dependent on fishing. Besides, other kinds of foods are available at reasonable rates in the local hotels and restaurants.
