Dubai: Top Things to avoid when going on Holiday in Dubai

Dubai is one of the world’s most renowned holiday destinations. This one time fishing village has established itself as one of the world’s top vacation spots as well as a playground for the rich and famous. Think of it as the Las Vegas of the Middle East. Just imagine, over 360 days of sunshine per year, no tax and just pure fun.

Dubai has the world’s tallest hotel, the world’s tallest skyscraper; the worlds highest paid horse race, largest shopping malls as well as real estate projects that just beggar belief. It just likes to be bigger and better than everyone else. It’s no wonder with promises of a better quality of life and riches, people are flocking to this small emirate which borders Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Although it is a very stable country considering its geographic location, one must remember that Dubai is a Muslim country and ruled by the Maktoum family. Although it is very liberal, Islamic values are the root of culture and traditions in the country. Below is an overview of things to avoid when visiting;

* Do not eat during Ramadan: During the holy month, avoid eating in public from sunrise until sunset. Ramadan lasts for a period of 30 days.

* If you are male, do not shake hands with women unless you are greeted first. What you can do is say Assulaam Alaikum and put your hand on your heart to acknowledge the greeting.

* When shaking hands with men or women, only shake with the right hand. Do not shake with the left hand as this could cause offence.

* Do not drink alcohol in public. Dubai is a ‘dry state’ and alcohol consumption in public could land you in jail. Unless you are a non muslim resident, you can apply for a license. Expat muslims cannot get a license. Dubai’s many bars and pubs are located within hotels where you can drink as much as you like although rowdy behaviour has absolutely no teolerance.

* Dress modestly. Women must ensure that they try not to wear skirts that are higher than the knee. Avoid wearing clothing that is too tight and revealing.

* When you take pictures, ensure you do not take them of Emirati/Muslim women. This could also land you in jail and is frowned upon. Try and only take pictures of friends, family or of the landmarks and try to keep others who you do not know out of the picture.

* Don’t carry any form of drugs: Even if these are for recreational use. You would assume that this is common sense but people tend to forget this when on holiday. The UAE has a zero policy on drugs and if you get caught you could get the death penalty. In fact carrying drugs should be avoided for all countries, its a ‘no brainer’.

* Don’t say anything that could insult the Muslim faith. This could land you in jail and get you deported. In some extreme cases, blasphemy can even land you the death penalty.

* Avoid touching anyone’s head as this is considered to be very offensive by Emiratis.
