Fiji offers a unique blend of culture and natural beauty and travelling to this friendly country always promises a magical vacation. Most people go to Fiji for the gorgeous beaches and relaxing sun and none are disappointed. Whether you’re looking to dive amongst spectacular coral and fish, laze on the beach under the sun, or explore rich cultural and historical sites, Fiji offers the diversity to please any traveller. As you plan your trip, consider these 5 travel tips:

1) Choose the Right Island

Think about what you hope to get out of your trip as you start to plan. If you are looking to swim, snorkel, surf and kayak, try the Yasawa Group. If you and your family are seeking a fun time in the sun, look into the Mamanuca Group. If you want to experience awesome diving, consider Taveuni, Beqa Lagoon, to name a few. If you want to tuck away in a romantic secluded spot, escape to the remote beaches of Kadavu, or the Northern Islands of Fiji.

2) Learn Some Language

English is the official language in Fiji, but the native language is well persevered and widely spoken. There are many terms that you might hear incorporated into everyday language. Before you go, make an effort to learn a bit of the language for the full cultural experience of Fiji.

3) Book with Air Pacific

Air Pacific has a range of flight deals and packages that will get you to Fiji both luxuriously and affordably. Air Pacific offers both international flights that will get you to and from Fiji as well as highly affordable domestic flights to shuttle you comfortably and easily from island to island.

4) Pack Smart

Unless you are planning to take a trek high up into the mountains, don’t worry about packing clothes for cold weather. Fiji is almost always warm, even in the evening and night. Pack plenty of light clothes including bathing suits and cotton shirts, shorts and dresses. Even formal evening events won’t dip below the ‘crisp casual’ range of clothing, so don’t worry about packing formalwear. Prepare yourself for the occasional tropical rain and with a waterproof jacket. As with any beach outing, protect yourself from the elements with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent.

5) Know the Customs

While beachwear is perfectly acceptable at the resorts, scanty clothing is inappropriate in villages. When shopping, remember that bargaining is encouraged at small local shops and stalls, but not at all in major department and grocery stores. Tipping in Fiji is not customary. Visit any village or private home, especially on a weekend, and you will undoubtedly be offered a coconut shell filled with kava, a traditional drink with mildly intoxicating properties. Enjoy!

Dubai is one of the world’s most renowned holiday destinations. This one time fishing village has established itself as one of the world’s top vacation spots as well as a playground for the rich and famous. Think of it as the Las Vegas of the Middle East. Just imagine, over 360 days of sunshine per year, no tax and just pure fun.

Dubai has the world’s tallest hotel, the world’s tallest skyscraper; the worlds highest paid horse race, largest shopping malls as well as real estate projects that just beggar belief. It just likes to be bigger and better than everyone else. It’s no wonder with promises of a better quality of life and riches, people are flocking to this small emirate which borders Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Although it is a very stable country considering its geographic location, one must remember that Dubai is a Muslim country and ruled by the Maktoum family. Although it is very liberal, Islamic values are the root of culture and traditions in the country. Below is an overview of things to avoid when visiting;

* Do not eat during Ramadan: During the holy month, avoid eating in public from sunrise until sunset. Ramadan lasts for a period of 30 days.

* If you are male, do not shake hands with women unless you are greeted first. What you can do is say Assulaam Alaikum and put your hand on your heart to acknowledge the greeting.

* When shaking hands with men or women, only shake with the right hand. Do not shake with the left hand as this could cause offence.

* Do not drink alcohol in public. Dubai is a ‘dry state’ and alcohol consumption in public could land you in jail. Unless you are a non muslim resident, you can apply for a license. Expat muslims cannot get a license. Dubai’s many bars and pubs are located within hotels where you can drink as much as you like although rowdy behaviour has absolutely no teolerance.

* Dress modestly. Women must ensure that they try not to wear skirts that are higher than the knee. Avoid wearing clothing that is too tight and revealing.

* When you take pictures, ensure you do not take them of Emirati/Muslim women. This could also land you in jail and is frowned upon. Try and only take pictures of friends, family or of the landmarks and try to keep others who you do not know out of the picture.

* Don’t carry any form of drugs: Even if these are for recreational use. You would assume that this is common sense but people tend to forget this when on holiday. The UAE has a zero policy on drugs and if you get caught you could get the death penalty. In fact carrying drugs should be avoided for all countries, its a ‘no brainer’.

* Don’t say anything that could insult the Muslim faith. This could land you in jail and get you deported. In some extreme cases, blasphemy can even land you the death penalty.

* Avoid touching anyone’s head as this is considered to be very offensive by Emiratis.

Nagarhole National Park is one of the most fruitful destinations for those inclined towards creatures of the wild. Invest your time in the Park wandering through it searching for wild inhabitants and you might get rewarded with breathtaking sights. The Park is ideally located in the beautiful districts of Kodagu and Mysore in southern Karnataka. Sprawling over an area of 640 sq km, the Park was established in 1955.

The Park boasts of a rich variety of wildlife species including tiger. There are around 250 bird species in the Park and common babbler, bee-eater, bulbul, dove, crested serpent, hornbill, Malabar pied, alexandrine, peacock, woodpecker, warbler, great Indian reed, eagle, crested hawk, golden-back parakeet and the southern tree pie are a few to name. The river Kabini separates this Park from the Bandipur National Park. Nagarhole National Park is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Once the hunting ground of the rulers of Mysore, the Park has thick forest, small streams, beautiful valleys and mesmerizing waterfalls, which make it an ideal habitat for wildlife.

The vegetation of the Park encompasses moist mixed deciduous forest in the southern parts, dry tropical forest towards the east, and Sub mountain hill valley swamp forest (Eugenia). The main trees which dominate the landscape of the Park are Rosewood, teak, sandalwood and silver oak. You can spot a variety of wildlife in the Park such as four-horned antelope, sloth bear, jungle cat, civet, spotted deer, elephant, wild dog, flying fox, tiger, panther, gaur (Indian bison), sambhar, wild boar, black-naped hare, bonnet macaque and pangolin.

Other inhabitants of the Park are cobras, crocodiles, kraits, pythons, vipers, and several species of lizards. You can also visit the surrounding hills outside the Park which are a home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and Nilgiri langurs.

The Pennines are a low rising mountain rage which runs through northern England and southern Scotland. The mountain range often referred to as the ‘backbone of England’ separates the North West of England from Yorkshire and the North East.

The range runs from the Peak District in Derbyshire through the Yorkshire Dales, around Manchester, through Lancashire and Cumbria and up to the English and Scottish boarders.

One of the most popular attractions of this beautiful part of England is the Pennine Way, a nature trail which runs for an incredible 267 miles. The trail is ideal for distance and day walkers as it offers a variety of different terrain as well as some truly stunning scenery and cultural and historical landmarks.

Some of the landmarks that can be seen along the trail include the site of the mass trespasses of the 30s at Kinder Scout, the cradle of the Industrial Revolution in the south Pennines, Haworth the home of the Bronte sisters and all the way up to the ancient Roman Wall dividing England and Scotland.

Every year hundreds of thousands of people walk either part of or the entire trail. While this has boosted the local economy by millions of pounds and introduced many to the beauty of the area it has lead to some erosion of terrain in places. This has lead to local authorities laying huge sections of paths to not only protect the landscape but also provide a better walking surface for walkers.

The idea of the Pennine Way was that of journalist and hiker Tom Stephenson who got his inspiration from similar trails in the US. The idea was first mooted in 1395 and was later lobbied in Parliament. The final section of the trail was officially opened in 1965.

The Northern Pennines is one of the most popular regions of the mountain range and has been designated an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The region is charicterised by open heather moorland and peatland, beautiful dales and meadows, roaring upland rivers, lush green woodland, a rich history and a whole variety of animal and birdlife.

Throughout the Pennines there are many more great things to see and do.

Are you contemplating a break? Somewhere warm and inviting? Somewhere where the average daytime temperature is around 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit).

Perhaps you are dreaming of somewhere with endless golden beaches overlooking deep turquoise waters and a choice of world class islands just a quick boat trip away?

If this is your idea of paradise, then you are in luck. This is exactly what the Whitsunday region of Queensland is like, day in, day out. This time of the year would have to be absolute perfection. The ideal place to holiday.

Imagine a casual barefoot stroll on one of the many golden beaches while working on your tan. Perhaps a relaxing boat trip to one of the tropical islands in the region. You are spoiled for choice, there are 74 of them in the region including the famous Daydream Island, South Mole Island and Hamilton Island.

There’s never a shortage of activities in this region. The next big one to keep in mind is the famous “Whitsunday Reef Festival”. Now in it’s 8th year this annual event strives to be a colourful celebration of the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays. The event runs from the 15/10/2009 till the 19/10/2009.

Airlie Beach Queensland is the perfect place to base yourself for such an experience. When it comes to Whitsundays accommodation or Great Barrier Reef accommodation for that matter, it is difficult to better the region in and around Airlie Beach.

If you are going to holiday in paradise, you may as well stay at a place that is pretty much as perfect as the area it represents. One such place is Mediterranean Resorts. Mediterranean Resorts boasts spacious apartments with private balconies overlooking the Coral Sea. Indeed the facilities and the views offered need to be seen to be believed.

Additionally the resort facilities include 2 beautiful saltwater pools, both with outstanding views and a spa in which to refresh.

The Whitsundays really is the perfect place to holiday and Mediterranean Resorts is well worth considering if it’s outstanding luxury accommodation you seek.

You can learn more at http://www.medresorts.com.au or call direct on 1800 802 089.

The Mayan Ruins of Tulum is one of the most famous ruins to visit. The other two, Coba and Xel-Ha, are all conveniently located not far from Akumal and other areas in the Riviera Maya region.

To be able to explore the beauty of the Tulum ruins, one must arrive early in the day. Probably long before the scorching heat of the midday sun. Most tour buses arrived early in the morning. You can also opt to renting a car. This way you can explore a little bit on your own before taking a guided tour.

In ancient times, the Mayan developed a holy inner city that ascended high above the majestic crystal blue seaside of the Caribbean and was protected by 3 enormous walls and a steep cliff. This wall house was given the honorary name of Tulum, the walled Mayan city. Each of the ruins are indicated with plaques in several languages so you can take a self guided tour, or hire a tour guide to get some real insight to the Mayan culture and the history behind these majestic ruins.

Head a little further south of the ruins is a genuine paradise, where the beach stretches on for miles and miles of white sand, enclosed by dense jungle and a spread of Tulum Beach House , hotels and beautiful resorts. The coast of Tulum has clear, turquoise blue water with white sand that was adorned with palm tree. These sections are unspoiled and more quiet hotels are also found here.

Most hotels found in the place have ecological theme. They were designed with wooden walls, palm roof, cabin floors were made of sand and they used solar energy to provide electricity to the rooms. Tourist can definitely state that Tulum is an exceptional place which lays a wealth of history, seclusion and tranquility that is just waiting to be discovered.

So you’re like John Locke of the TV series Lost and simply (literally) dying for an adventure. Or maybe you’re just bored to death and you want to experience more of life. Have no fear… no need to travel across the globe to taste adventure in the wilds of Africa or the rainforests of South America. Why should you when you’ve got Alaska. Alaska… the 49th state and fondly known as the Land of the Midnight Sun and The Last Frontier.

Most people believe that Alaska, a name which comes from an Aleut word meaning “land that’s not an island” is simply tundra in the middle of nowhere because of it’s distance from the lower 48 states and because most of the stories you hear about it are usually related to the cold and snow and so-called vast, desolate, open spaces. But you thought wrong.

Alaska – the largest state (by land mass) is also one of the least populated – is a land that combines the beautiful snowy scenery of the Alps with the challenge of an adventure trip to the Congo.

Don’t believe me?

That’s okay because I’ve got proof.

River Fishing When someone mentions Alaska, people usually visualize a land of ice and frozen desert. So it’s a bit hard to imagine people being able to fish in such a place. But like I mentioned earlier, Alaska is a place filled with adventure, a place well worth traveling to.

For your Alaska fishing adventure, you can try your luck at hooking any of a variety of prized fish like: Silver Salmon in Resurrection Bay during August and September, the King Salmon of the Lower Kenai River from May to July or Red (Sockeye) Salmon, Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout in the Upper Kenai River.

Rafting Yes, you can raft to your hearts’ content and pretend you’re a lone wanderer having an adventure in the midst of the vast array of Alaskan wildlife. Travel and encounter the many natural wonders of Alaska. Listen to the stories of the natives. Catch a glimpse of moose and bald eagles as you hold on for dear life while traversing the rapids of Kenai River Canyon – a trip that is highly recommended and one that you don’t want to miss.

Backpacking This is an adventure you must grab because there’s virtually nothing that compares to backpacking in Alaska. You can of course choose your own adventure travel destination: Brooks Range, Artic Refuge, Talkeetna Mountains, and Wrangell-St. Elias to name just a few.

Sea Kayaking This not so common adventure is one that only traveling to Alaska can bestow upon you. This is not for the feint of heart and make sure, that you don’t attempt this alone.

Expeditions to Walrus Island So you haven’t seen any of those furry adorable creatures up close? Find yourself aching for more of a marine adventure rather than a landlocked one? Or perhaps you’re content to simply watch. Have no fear because Alaska’s Walrus Island has it all. You can view walrus, other marine mammals and rare bird species from the comfortable deck of a cruising yacht. But if you want a bit more of a challenge, you can take a hiking trip and see more of the Alaskan wildlife.Want more proof??

Renowned for being one of the most breathtaking destinations on earth, the Maldives has certainly got it right when it comes to the exotic. Boasting an unparalleled array of unspoilt beaches, luxurious accommodation options and glistening, clear blue waters, it is impossible not to fall in love with this slice of paradise.

Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is comprised of over 1,000 coralline islands, of which 202 are inhabited. Due to the fact that 99.5 percent of its territory is sea, water plays an integral role in island life. Indeed, fishing and boat expeditions form a central role in the economy, and as a result, the country has become famous for its snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities.

The capital, Male’, is a great place to begin your exploration of the Maldives and offers up some truly unique experiences. The fish market is definitely worthy of a visit and is the perfect place to discover the vast range of delicious seafood on offer.

To gain a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people, as well as learning about their rich and intriguing history, you should also make time to visit the Huskuru Miskiiy – the city’s main mosque and home to one of the world’s most impressive exhibits of coral curving – and the National Museum.

However, if tropical paradise is what you’re after, then no trip to the Maldives would be complete without experiencing the many beaches scattered around. Opulent, enchanting and exotic go some way to describing what the islands and their resorts are like, but without visiting them, it is impossible to believe such perfection exists.

Due to its abundance of sea life and staggering coral reefs, the Maldives are cited as one of the best scuba diving and snorkelling locations in the world. In addition to being able to spot such fish as Napoleon Wrasse, parrotfish, sweetlips and barracudas, it is also possible to embrace the spirit of exploration with the abundance of hidden caves and caverns.

Not only that, but according to research, the coral reaches an overwhelming depth of 2,100 metres on the fringing reef; an incredible fact when you imagine that, on average, it can take a year for coral to grow a mere 2 millimetres! It is little wonder then that the Maldives’ underwater world attracts a huge number of both hobby and professional diving enthusiasts.

And, there can be nothing more enticing after a long, hard day spent in the water, than indulging in one of the luxurious spa treatments available or relaxing on the beach, cocktail in hand, watching the sun set over paradise. Maldives holidays are therefore ideal for those seeking a relaxing holiday in a tropical paradise.

Once I was on the train I wrote the previous blog entry and enjoyed the scenery. It was a nice ride once I found a seat. The train was pretty full. Once we got to Innsbruck, out came Tom again.

The walk to the hotel was easy and quick. Brian found another good option. It is right in the heart of the Innenstadt on Maria Teresien Strasse. Just a few meters away is the Golden Roof building and Helblinghaus. After I checked in I relaxed in the room for a little to let the camera batter charge. Then I head-ed out and started to use the battery up again. I headed to the Imperial Palace (Hofburg).

It was originally build by Maximilian I and then renovated by Maria Teresa into the Rococo style. It is under renovation so only three rooms are open to the public: the Guard room, the Giant Room, and the Lorraine Room. There was a guide stationed in the rooms and since I was the only person there we chatted some about the palace. Maria Teresa’s husband was from Innsbruck. She liked in here in the summers because it was cooler than Vienna. Since she was pregnant 17 times, I think she might have wanted to be com-fortable. In the Giant room, she hard picture of her, her husband and their 17 children hung. Above each child is a smaller painting of their spouse if they were married. The sad thing is that even though she carried the Habsburg bloodline, she could not be crowned Empress because she was a woman. She was crowned Queen of two countries of the Empire, Hungary and Bohemia. I also walked though and exhibit on mountains. It was interesting. At this point it was 17:00. I had to leave the Hofburg. I wondered over to the park where Leopold’s Fountain is across from the Hofburg. It is the oldest surviving depiction of a rearing horse north of the Alps. A couple of quick snaps and it was off to the Hofkirche. This is the church where Maximilian I tomb is located. Maximilian wanted to ensure he had a proper tomb so he designed it himself. He commissioned the best artists of the day to work on it. It is a very impressive monument. The sad thing is he is not in it. He is laid to rest in Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. The tomb itself dominates the center of the church.

On either side there are larger than life bronze statues representing hi “ancestors”. He did take some license in who he included, such as King Arthur. There are 28 bronze statues. The origi-nal plan called for 40. At the time of his death there were only 11 completed. Some of the notable people represented are: Queen Maria of Burgundy – Wife and the mother of Margarthe Archduchess Margarethe of Austria – his daughter who ruled The Netherlands after the death of her husband Empress Maria Bianca Sforza – Second wife King Rudolf I – Secured the Habsburg’s power There are also 23 miniature statues of the patron saints of the Habsburg family.

While I was at the church the battery for the camera gave out again. I guess I didn’t charge it quite enough. I finished up and headed out again. At this point most tourist attractions were closed. I went to couple of shops and picked up small souvenirs. They have to be small be-cause I don’t have room for more than that. I also got the big buy of postcards. Luckily the ho-tel had stamps. I headed to the room for a bit and worked on the blog and pictures. Armed with post cards and pin I set out for a beer and then dinner. I managed to finish the post card and start a new book, Angels and Demons. I want to read it before seeing the movie. After dinner it was back to the room for a nice chat with Brian and the working on the blog and pictures. At this point I am up much later then I intended to be. Oh well tomorrow is Sunday. I am headed to Warsaw in the afternoon. But for a good part of the day I can continue to Explore Innsbruck.
