Bangkok, city of mystique and of madness, is an enigma, even to the people who are born and bred there. Exuding charm and charisma along with an air of mystery, she is a very complex and sophisticated lady indeed. Her flip side runs even deeper.

For visitors who care to journey beyond the comfort of a luxurious hotel and high end shopping malls, an amazing hodge-podge of pulsating and flamboyant life exists, intermingled with what many might call, squalor. But amongst such squalor a vibrant and active lifeblood thrives, where the inhabitants are busy carving out their own livelihood which impacts positively as well as negatively on the city as a whole. A lower education can still bring rewards and a sense of belonging. These are the communities that are the nuts and bolts of a bigger picture, cramped along railway tracks, construction sites, numerous canals that criss-cross the city and around the “slum” markets that sprawl on the outer fringes of metropolitan Bangkok.

In between, a vast middle class completes the patchwork, an engine room that runs at high speed during daylight hours while continuing to churn like clockwork under cover of darkness.

What does this mean for the two-day tourist, the lengthy leisure traveller or busy businessman? The short answer is almost everything, as each of the groups mentioned, contribute significantly to the particular type of stay each individual will have, whether it be enjoyable, adventurous or otherwise. These groups will also ensure the kind of memories each traveller will take home, either mystique, madness or somewhere in between.

And the “players” in the “game” are counted as just one aspect that contribute to the image of building this sophisticated lady we call Bangkok. Known as the city of angels, it is often the devil, the dark, demon side of her that draws so many millions to observe, see, smell, hear, touch and feel what makes her stand out from the crowd. What has created this aura and made her so famous, so attractive, that visitors from all age groups from all over the world, need to experience her? That leads us into another realm.

The players, “Bangkokians,” just love to have fun. Smiling is second nature, so therein lies a clue. Work and play are normal activities anywhere, but it is in the attitude of an almost carefree “never mind” way of thinking, a deep seated mind-set. Work is fun and a social environment for the majority. When it is time to party, the whole city is just one big fun-house. The diversity of entertainment is virtually endless, from road side eateries where small and large groups congregate and simply have fun, or the full-on classy venues, lounges, dance clubs and nightclubs to the colourful and seedy side, it’s still all about having a great time.

People and places, venues and faces, characterise what stands for such a vibrant city. Religion and spirituality, festivals, architecture and sheer devotion to their monarch are serious factors determining day to day life. Politics is mostly a monster that the majority would prefer to simply go away, but it still yields an influence, however, at the end of the day, considered opinion tends to ignore it rather than give it much credence, lest it weigh down thoughts of just wanting to be a part of a society that knows how to have fun. That is the charm of this wonderful lady Bangkok, a little chaotic, but also one who knows how to retain her mystique and yet still be admired for the madness she has to offer.

http://www.iguidebangkok.com A gateway to Bangkok or the “City of Angels”, iguidebangkok.com is an attractive portal website accentuating the outstanding concept “where to go & what to do in Bangkok with clear guide map”.

Bali is the most beautiful island in the world.Bali Island, the perfect holiday destination for all ages offers something for everyone.

This tropical paradise has a unique blend of modern tourist facilities combined with wonderful shopping and a rich past and heritage. The Balinese people are proud of having preserved their unique Hindu culture against the advance of Islam, the dominant religion throughout Indonesia. This is still reflected in day to day life and can be seen in the numerous ceremonies, Balinese festivals and magnificent temples and palaces. Some of the best surfing beaches in the world can be found on the western side of the island whilst conversely the eastern side is a wonderful haven for families, with beautiful white sand beaches and gentle seas.

The island of Bali is blessed with the line of beaches surrounding it.

Festivals and ritual ceremonies are the important part of Balinese daily life, held according to Balinese calendar. Temple festivals held mostly in every 210 days or every six months; and life-cycle ceremonies since the human embryo lives in mother’s womb, having birth, birthday, tooth filings, wedding until funeral rites and cremation.

One of the most spectacular ceremonies in Bali is probably the cremation ceremony. In Balinese this ceremony is called Ngaben. Ofcourse, like any ceremony in Bali, the cremation ceremony’s size and spectacle depends on the importance of the deceased, and the money spend. While the poorest of the Balinese are buried, and finally cremated in group cremations, the people with some more money to spend are cremated right away. One thing is for sure, the body needs to be burned to set the soul free from worldly ties, and to start a new life in a world that is supposed to be as beautiful as Bali itself.

The Balinese believe that each individual soul is reincarnated into many lifetimes, through numerous struggles and stages, until it achieves union with the divine. It is the duty of every Balinese Hindu to have children, in order to provide a vessel for the spirits of their ancestors to be reincarnated. A man does not become a full member of his Banjar (village council) until becomes a father.

Thailand is a very popular tourist destination in Asia and it is not hard to see why. The country offers an abundance of natural attractions, unique cuisine, and great people – not to mention fantastic weather!

Visa Requirements

Visitors from most Asian nations as well as tourists from the European Union and Western countries are not required to have a visa to enter Thailand if their primary purpose for visiting is a vacation. However, you need to have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of your arrival in the country. Depending on the home country and the means of transportation, visitors get permits of different lengths, so it is best to get in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find out more. Tourists should also note that they are legally required to carry their passport with them at all times.

Things to Do

Thailand constantly draws tourists year in and year out. One of the most popular tourist attractions are the many beautiful beaches Thailand has to offer. Another fun activity is golf, which is a very popular sport in the country and almost everyone in the country plays it.

Popular outdoor activities in Thailand include rock climbing, cycling, trekking, surfing, and scuba diving. If you enjoy a Thai massage, you should really try out a Thai massage. Spas are abundant in the country and tourists should definitely be pampered and enjoy this luxurious experience.

Sights to See

Aside from the beautiful beaches Thailand offers, there are also other great sights. One of these is the Khao Yai National Park in which tourists can experience forests and wildlife in a peacefully serene atmosphere. In the northern part of Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, tourists will also find plenty of historic ruins, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Khao Sok National Park is also a great place to visit. Being the oldest and biggest rainforest in the country, it is a great place for hiking as well as discovering a diverse variety of flora and fauna.

Behavior Tips for Foreigners

Thai people are very easy to get along with, as long as you do not insult the Royal Family. If for instance you drop a Thai coin or a paper bill, never stop it by stepping on it – just bend down to pick it up. The king’s face is on almost every currency and stepping on it is considered the same as stepping on the king’s face.

With Thai people naturally being conservative people, well-dressed foreigners will be surprised at the amount of respect and attention they will receive compared to others who are not so well-dressed. You should also be aware that you are required to take off your footwear when entering places of worship and homes, and even some shops.

In the event that you come across a monk, keep in mind that offering them money is a sign of disrespect. If you would like to make an offering to a monk, you should give food instead. Women should never give anything directly to a monk – it is best to place it in front of the monk so he can pick it up himself.

Borobudur is Southeast Asia’s largest Buddhist monument. The Mahayana Buddhist temple consists of six levels topped by an additional three circular platforms and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The topmost platform consists of the monument’s dome, which is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues. The temple is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site and is one of the country’s most visited attractions.

The temple is located near Magelang, Central Java Indonesia, about 40 kilometers northwest of Jogjakarta. Besides Borodudur, there are other Buddhist and Hindu temples in the area, such as Pawon, Mendut and the Prambanan temples compound. What differentiates Borobudur from the other temples in the region is that it is built on a bedrock hill, about 260 meters above sea level while the other temples were built on a flat surface.

The is no concrete history as to who built the temple and for what purpose, but historians believe that construction was finished sometime in the 9th century and that it may have taken over 70 years to complete. It may have started out as a Hindu temple but was converted into a Buddhist monument right before construction.

The base of the temple is square in shape, perhaps to symbolize earth’s impurity. As one goes up, the ‘stiffness’ of the square gives way to circular rings, symbolizing the transaction into the heavens. The paths also contain miniature stupas containing Buddhas inside. The way up the temple circumnavigates around the center, allowing visitors to observe over a kilometer of reliefs depicting events in Buddha’s life. The path also ascends through three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely Kamadhatu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formless meditation), with a system of stairways and corridors containing more than 1,400 relief panels.

The reason for Borobudur’s abandonment remains unclear. Two possibly interlinked events may explain its desertion. Between 928 and 1006 AD, there was a shift in power from Central Java to East Java and a series of volcano eruptions took place during that time. It is not entirely known if the natural disasters led to the shift in power, but this is the general consensus of Borobudur’s disbandment. Another popular belief for the temple’s abandonment is the population’s conversion to Islam in the 15th century.

The Buddhist monument was found under layers of volcanic ash and jungle growth by a joint British and Dutch expedition in 1814. Due to the fragile nature of the temple, Borobudur could not be completely unearthed at the time, having to wait until 1835 for the whole structure to be fully revealed. There were initial fears that Borobudur had to be disassembled completely and the reliefs placed in museums because of the monument’s unstable condition. But after a thorough investigation of the structure, it was revealed that these fears were unjustified and that it should be left intact.

After the UNESCO-funded restoration work in 1973, Borobudur was once again a place of worship and a Buddhist pilgrimage site. The ceremony for Visakha Bucha (sometimes known as Vesak), a day commemorating Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing away is celebrated at the three Buddhist temples by walking from Mendut to Pawon and ending at Borobudur.

Borobudur is certainly one of the must visit temples in all of Southeast Asia. It is massive and is perhaps the oldest temple in the region. Arrive early to reach Borobudur for sunrise, before the crowds turn up and enjoy a guided tour of the monument with Exotissimo’s Highlights of Jogjakarta and Surroundings tour.
Today, the buzzing and futuristic city is in constant flux. New trends disappear as quickly as they arrived. Yet, age-old traditions are deeply rooted reflecting a city that is both ancient and highly modern.

Getting around Tokyo:

Tokyo has two main airports. Narita airport handles international traffic exclusively, while Haneda airport deals with domestic flights and a few international flights.

Traveling from Narita Airport

Avoid getting a taxi to the city center as it is very costly. Members of the Taxi Council will now charge fixed fares based on destination zones e.g. a trip from Narita to Shinjuku will cost 21,000yen (US$220), excluding highway tolls. The best options would be to take the Airport Limousine Bus directly from the airport costing 3,000 yen (US$30) one way or the JR Narita Express Train costing around 3,310 yen (US$35) one way, depending on your destination.

Traveling around the city

Tokyo’s public transport system is excellent, with numerous subway lines. If you’re going to be in Tokyo for a few days, it’s may be more convenient to purchase a refillable, contactless card that automatically deducts fares, such as the Suica (for use on subways and major bus services in Tokyo) or the Pasmo (for riding on the JR and major bus services.)

The Shinkansen (bullet train) is one of the fastest trains in the world and connects major cities north and south of Tokyo. The train is only slightly less expensive than flying, but the train stations are conveniently more centrally located than airports.

Generally speaking, taxis are expensive. Tokyo taxi drivers rarely speak English, so if you don’t speak Japanese, it’s a good idea to have your destination written down in Japanese. Note that taxi doors open and close automatically.

Don’t miss…

There is so much to see and do in Japan, contrasting between traditional cultural experiences to the more colorful, neon light filled chaos.

Tsukiji fish market is located by the Sumida River. Be ready for an early start though – it opens at 5am! Here you will see restaurateurs bantering at the auctions for the best catches of the day. Visitors aren’t officially allowed at this time, but as long as you don’t get in the way and don’t take any flash photos, your presence will be tolerated.

For first time visitors, Tamaki Naiki, Director Marketing & Sales for BCD Travel in Tokyo recommends a visit to The Imperial Palace, home of Japan’s Emperor and imperial family. The palace itself is closed to the public, but you can wander around its outskirts and to visit the beautiful East Gardens. Here you can catch a glimpse of the palace’s most famous landmark, the double-barreled bridge (Nijū-bashi), apparently the most photographed scene in Japan.

Imperial Palace

Ginza is the most stylish stretch of the city, with suitable pricey shops and restaurants! Tech-heads shouldn’t miss the Sony Building, where the latest gadgets can be found as well as a whole floor devoted to the PlayStation.

Shibuya is a sprawl of gleaming office blocks with illuminated billboards and surrounded by relentless surging crowds. Take a walk across the famous intersection outside Shibuya Station, where pedestrians spill out like marbles as traffic stops in all directions, when all the lights turn red in unison.

In the north of Shibuya, visit the Shinto Meiji-jingu Shrine dedicated to the late 19th-century emperor who opened Japan to the West. The shrine is nestled amongst the Meiji Shrine Inner Gardens containing some 125,000 evergreen trees, providing a peaceful setting.

Where to eat:

Tokyo is teeming with places to eat. You can stumble across numerous noodle, ramen, sushi bars and “curry-rice” shops just about anywhere. While dining in Japan, Tamaki advises on a few rules of social etiquette you should remember:

* Do not pass food directly from your set of chopsticks to another’s and don’t stick your chopsticks upright in your food when you’ve finished – both actions denote funerary customs.
* If you have already eaten with your chopsticks, use the opposite end to take food from a shared plate.
* If you’re eating with other people, don’t pour your own drink. Fill your neighbor’s glass and wait for them to reciprocate.

The culinary power of Tokyo has risen dramatically and you can find many western style places to eat. In fact, Michelin – the keeper of the world’s culinary standards – has awarded more stars to restaurants in Tokyo than to those in any other city in the world, two thirds of which serve Japanese dishes.

Shopping:

You can easily find traditional Japanese items and the latest goods in Tokyo. Generally the city can be pricey, but you can find some cheap gifts at the 100Yen shops (similar to the $1 shops found in the U.S.) dotted around the city.

The Ginza is Tokyo’s version of New York’s 5th Avenue and rather expensive. Well-known department stores are attractively displayed with scheduled fashions shows, exhibitions and tea ceremonies.

Takashimaya Times Square is a popular department store in Shinjuku geared towards all ages. The basement-level food floor is a great place to taste free samples of different Japanese foods. In the same mall you will also find a branch of Tokyu Hands, the “Creative Life Store,” catering for the serious hobbyist or homeowner. You’ll find everything here from kitchenware to travel accessories to an electrically-warmed sheep pillow!

If its electrical goods you are after, then head to the Akihabara district. There are over 500 shops that sell electronics suitable for international use, with English speaking staff available. The prices are about 30 percent lower than the regular prices, and you can bargain too.

Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is just a three hours journey from New Delhi, the capital of India. It has been one of the most attractive tourist spots in India for foreigners for years. Taj Mahal, the “best-ever symbol of eternal love” stands on the bank of river Jamuna at Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Taj Mahal, one of India’s best architectural wonders was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in 1631 in the memory of his second wife, Arjumand Banu who was later known as Mumtaz Mahal, (The meaning of the word Mumtaz Mahal is the Distinguished of the Palace).

Taj, the famous dome rests on a huge white marble terrace rising from a high red sandstone base (186×186 feet ) is flanked by four tapering minarets. Shahjahan consulted experts from the Middle East and Europe as he planned his legacy, which took Twenty Thousand people over Twenty-Two years to build. Cheap Travel modes are available to reach Taj Mahal, which used to serve as a wide moat defense of the Great Red Fort of Agra, the capital of the Mughal empire in those days.

Three names pop up as the designer of Taj Mahal, Geronimo Veroneo an Italian, Silversmith Austin de Bordeaux – French and Ustad Ahmad – the Persian Engineer cum Astrologer. It is heard that materials were collected from various corners of the world, like hills of Markana, Chinese Turkestan, Tibet, Burma, Afghanistan, Egypt and the Himalayas.

Cheap Travel Packages are available to intrude into the thrilling interior of this magnificent Mughal architecture, which comprises a domed ceiling, lofty central chamber, four octagonal corner rooms, the cenotaphs of Sha Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal in the center, an ever-glowing Cairene lamp.

Despite the controversy, whether it’s a tomb or a Shiva Temple, known as Tejo Mahalaya (acquired by Shah Jahan from the then Maharaja of Jaipur), Taj sparkles when the white marble basks in the moonlight. One may stay at cheap travel hotels to witness this mesmerizing beauty especially on a full moon night.

Plan your journey through cheap travel to visit one of the world’s most famous monuments, Taj Mahal, which has just celebrated its 350th birthday.

Taj Mahal is said to express the different moods of a woman. It looks pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. So, the travel freaks and romantic couples planning their trip to India through cheap travel should not give the Taj a miss!

First let me state that my partner & I love Thailand! Probably the main reason for that is the Thai poeple, who are so friendly & eager to help without being pushy or intrusive. Of course, it also helps that the exchange rate means that a good time can be had eating out, shopping & enjoying a Thai massage!

We spent a few days in Chang Mai in the north of Thailand, which was cooler but still green & tropical. It is a former capital in a scenic area, quite close to the Burmese border on one side & North Vietnam & Laos on the other. We will return there to explore further. We also went to Kanchanburi to see the Death Railway & Bridge on the River Kwae. Whilst the Railway and cemetery were very moving and the stay in the floating hotel moored on the banks of the river was relaxing, we found the area quite arid compared to Chang Mai and considerably less scenic.

Our main stay this time was in Patong, the major tourist area of Phuket in the Southern peninsular of Thailand, which has completely recovered from the tsunami. It is brash, with plenty of shopping and nightlife and a crowded beach, although there are quieter beaches close by, one of which we stayed at. However, if it is shopping you are principally interested in, go to Bangkok instead, as it is cheaper and there is plenty of nightlife and things of interest there too.

Phuket has several world class golf courses, my main interest, most of them carved out of old tin mining areas resulting in large water hazards with steep, deep sides in many cases! Blue Canyon and the Lakes are two adjoining courses near the airport, exclusive & with residential facilities attached. Laguna is halfway between the airport and Patong, is flatter and is part of a resort complex. Country Club is near Patong and has 27 holes. Loch Palm is also near Patong and has a second course next to it completed only a couple of years ago, Red Mountain, which I think is the best course of the lot. It is very scenic and although all these courses are challenging, this is probably the most challenging, with the advantage that if you are not having a good day, you can relax and enjoy the views! There is another course, Mission Hills, which I have not played. Prices vary, but are not cheap by Aussie standards and there are caddy fees and tips on top. I have heard that courses in Pattaya are cheaper, so that will be on the agenda for the future. Although I have a mate in Phuket who provides me with a lot of advice and information, I’ve found the following sites useful for a range of information as well http://www.discoverythailand.com and http://www.sawadee.com.

For Hindus, Makar Sankranti is among the biggest religious festivals and in Bengal, it is the time for the Ganga Sagar Mela, that takes place at the Sagardweep.

Located at an approximate distance of 150 kilometers from the Southern part of Kolkata, Sagardweep is actually an island where the Ganges meets the sea. Every year in mid-January, Sagardweep gets crowded with thousands of devotees who gather at the Sangam (the meeting point of Ganges and the sea) for taking a holy dip to get rid of all sins. A huge mela (fair) takes place on the coast and turns into a big festival for the religious people.

However, holy dip in the Ganges is not the only reason why people visit sagardweep. Thanks to its unique geographical location, the Sagardweep offers great scenic beauty that attracts tourists, who look for places to enjoy weekends. Besides, there is a 19th century lighthouse in sagardweep, from where a panoramic view of the coastal Bengal is available.

Sagardweep is very well-connected with Kolkata both by roadway and railway but the later is preferred by more people as the journey is short. Bay taking a Diamond Harbour-bound train from Sealdah South section one can reach close to Sgardweep within two hours. After getting down from the train at Diamond Harbour, one can take cycle van or a bus to be at the island.

The standard of accommodatin facility at sagardweep is not as developed as other beach resorts in the area but still one can find hotels that offer satisfactory services. Food, especially variety of fishes is available in Sagardweep, as the economy of the area is largely dependent on fishing. Besides, other kinds of foods are available at reasonable rates in the local hotels and restaurants.
