A holiday in New Zealand can be as adventurous or as calm as you plan. The country has an unbelievable quantity of sights and leisure activities in comparison to its size. The country is perfect for couples, independent travelers and groups and families. Lots of people visit here as newlyweds as the beauty of the place is unsurpassed.

The people of New Zealand are a mixed bunch; since Captain James Cook arrived here many cultures have moved here to live alongside the Maori population, residents themselves for more at least 1000 years. Today, the Maori culture, language and art is still very much in evidence and to add extra interest other ethnic groups have arrived from Polynesia (Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands) China, Taiwan, Korea and Vietnam.

There are 2 islands in New Zealand, North and South and are separated by the narrow Cook Strait. The North Island is the location of Auckland and Wellington, the country’s main cities, but each island offers a broad variety of appeal to visitors.

New Zealand isn’t normally chosen just for a beach holiday by holiday-makers, they are looking for an adventure too. The country can certainly provide this with anything from snorkeling, backpacking, kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking available. There are lots of organized tours; many involve adventure based activities intended for groups, families or individuals. Cheap hotels can be booked by doing a hotel search online.

New Zealand is prominent for its stunning vista and tourists arrive here from around the globe to explore it. Unlike any other country the beaches are pristine, the ocean blue and the wildlife offers exotic birds, bats, tropical frogs some unusual reptiles due to being cut off from the rest of the world for millions of years. The Kiwi bird is native to New Zealand but there is concern it is becoming an extinct species mainly due to the fact it is unable to defend itself against other predators.

Taking a guided tour is always a good idea you are guaranteed to see all the best parts of the city or area. If you are interested in the history and culture of the country then this is a great way to learn about the inhabitants and observe them and their country.

Making up part of North Island is the Pacific’s ‘Ring of Fire’ where volcanoes are still active although Ruapehu hasn’t erupted since 1995; visit the geothermal areas of Rotorua and Taupo where you can see geysers and hot springs. New Zealand is also a fisherman’s paradise as the rivers and lakes and clean shoreline are unpolluted. Trout, salmon and perch have been introduced to the country and it has some of the best fly fishing in the world. Big game fishing for tuna, shark and marlin is predominantly good off North Island’s Pacific coast.

Across New Zealand there is a broad selection of accommodation and lodging available, anything from luxury hotels offering the highest international standards to enjoyable backpacker hostels. Motels and lodges typically offer self contained units frequently with full cooking facilities. You can easily find cheap hotels online if you prefer to book before you go.

New Zealand has something for everyone, lush forests, hot springs and geysers, vineyards, wide lakes, deep fiords, majestic mountains, ski fields and open grasslands. With no need to go anywhere else, search for cheap hotels Asia online. Go online and find hotels in New Zealand as well as cheap accommodation in Singapore, Las Vegas or anywhere else in the world at reasonable rates.

One of the most important parts of planning a bird watching holiday in New Zealand is to get the best accommodations to fit your needs.

There are many options in the Whangamata Beach area to choose from. Two of the major choices of bird watching holidays would include whether you wanted a short one day guided tour, or if you were looking into spending a memorable week really getting a feel for the area and what kinds of birds reside there.

By doing a bit of research and planning ahead, you can get a better idea of the best time of the year to go to the Whangamata Beach area for bird watching. Changing seasons can provide a different list of birds to look at because of various migration patterns of some species. Another reason to get a better background of the area is to make sure that the Kiwi species is available to see.

The actual area of Whangamata Beach is part of the reason why there are so many great species of bird to see. The beach is adjacent to a rain forest area, so the natural habitat makes for a great variation of birds to see whether in the air, on the water, or in their own nesting grounds. Getting accommodations for your bird watching holiday close to the walking areas will make it much easier to get out and really enjoy your bird watching activities.

By taking an option of going along with a guided tour you can be sure that not only will you be able to see a lot of the species, but get information on them as well so you know what to look for. Background information on the area itself relating to the evolution of the different birds can be very educational and bring about a better understanding of the whole tour.

Coastal areas are great places to find the types of interesting birds that can make a memorable holiday, but there are also many other recreational activities that can be done. From playing in the sunshine to lounging in the sand, after a hard days work of seeking out beautiful varieties of birds to watch, beach play can be a relaxing time.

I love the beach. I was there today, at my usual haunt – Riversdale. It’s been a tremendously tough week, and going there is always the best way to deal with it.

The tide was all the way in. Everyone on the beach was sitting up in the dunes, and it was pretty spectacular. Usually the sea is a fair way out.

Now – I love beaches with honking great waves. I’m not a surfer, but myself and my family have always enjoyed the beaches with the huge waves – we just get pummelled by them rather than try and ride them.

So it was with a huge amount of rapture today that we got to Riversdale to find ginormous waves, crashing down the whole length of the beach. We didn’t sit down and relax for a while first – we just headed straight in.

Blimey – the sea was so strong. Within minutes – we were deep enough in that the water was up to our waists – but the waves were so big, that by the time we could stand up after being bowled over by one – the water was up to our necks. A few times – I couldn’t reach the bottom. It was so much fun!

But we also have to be very careful. You see, the waves were that strong – we couldn’t always stand up, and ended up getting dragged into shore – often along the beach as well. And at the same time, as the sea rolled back out – it would drag us out to sea. The strength was phenomenal! (Does that count as a workout???). Trying to stand in one place was pretty difficult, and we both got tired pretty quickly.

One of the reasons I like Riversdale so much is that it is a Patrolled Beach – with DHL Surf Lifeguards looking after it during the high season. I have always had a healthy respect for the sea: while it is a lot of fun – it can kill you if you don’t take the dangers seriously.

This is especially so with New Zealand beaches. Please don’t assume that it is safe to swim at them. Many of them contain Riptides or Rip currents – and if you are not a strong swimmer – or panic – you can end up an ex-swimmer pretty fast.

This is serious.

There have been 13 drownings at New Zealand Beaches in the first 17 days of 2009. If you can’t swim, then learn. Hubby didn’t lean how to swim until about 9 years ago (he was banned from school swimming lessons because they thought it was more important to force him to write Right-handed). Now he is actually a very good swimmer – and gets to enjoy mucking around with huge waves as much as the rest of us.

Riversdale surf lifesaving club runs classes to teach children how to deal with the beach safely – so it’s worth looking for a local version – and getting your kids enrolled.

And learn how to spot rips!

Most importantly – if you are at a beach in New Zealand with signs up saying it’s not safe to swim – then don’t go in the water. Rip Tides can pull you out to sea even if you are just standing in relative shallow water.

Enjoy the beaches in New Zealand – they are stunning – just don’t be stupid.

Watersafe Auckland has a list of safety tips:

1. The safest place to swim at a beach is between the red and yellow flags at lifeguard patrolled beaches.

2.Lifeguards are trained to assess the safest areas for swimming and they mark those areas with red and yellow flags.

3. Listen to advice from lifeguards – they are experienced and trained to assist.

4. Follow the advice of safety signs.

5. Always swim with a friend and under adult supervision.

6. Never run and dive into the water before checking the depth.

7. Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

8. Do not depend on flotation devices as you can lose them. Off shore winds will carry you out to sea more easily when you are on a board. Use a safety leash with a boogie board or surf board.

9. Be aware of rip currents. Learn how to read the water so you may recognize dangers and judge areas of water space more safe for family use.

10. Heavy clothing such as jeans or hoodies make it harder for you to swim in the water.

11. If you get into trouble raise your arm for assistance, float and wait for help

12. Stay out if in doubt about the surf conditions or your own ability
